Mosquito Safety Tips

Arizona’s warm climate means that mosquitos can be active for most of the year. During monsoon season, mosquitos become even more active. While most mosquito bites are harmless, some can spread illnesses like West Nile. Knowing how to protect you and your family can help reduce your risk.

What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus is mainly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who get infected don’t experience any symptoms, but some may develop a mild illness. In rare instances, West Nile virus can cause serious illness.

Symptoms to Watch For

Some people develop symptoms like:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Rash

More serious symptoms can include confusion, weakness, and tremors. If you develop any concerning symptoms it’s best to contact your health provider.

Easy Ways to Protect Yourself and Your Family

Mosquitos can breed in small amounts of standing water. Take a few minutes to check your outdoor spaces for any place water can collect like: buckets, plant saucers, pet bowls, and other containers. Here are some other tips:

  • Use EPA-registered insect repellant.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when you can.
  • Empty standing water around your house regularly.
  • Keep doors and windows screened.
  • Change outdoor pet water frequently.
  • Try to stay indoors from 8:00pm-6:00am, when mosquitos are most active.

Note: when using insect repellent on children, always follow the product’s age directions.

When Should You Seek Care?

Most mosquito bites don’t require medical attention. However, if you develop symptoms after being bitten by mosquitoes—especially a high fever, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or other concerning symptoms—contact your healthcare provider.
