Sir William Osler once said, “The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” During my junior year as an undergraduate, I was fortunate enough to shadow the daily life of an orthopedic PA at Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza, Spain. During my stay, I spent months observing a wide variety of surgeries and journaled extensively how integrative and essential the role of a PA is in diagnosing and treating a patient. I witnessed providers truly defined patient-centered care through their work and how they built relationships with pre- and post-operative patients using empathetic and personable traits while meeting the patients’ needs. Through this experience, I felt motivated to pursue a career as a physician associate.
