Emergency Room or Urgent Care?

Know the symptoms and make the right choice.

Dr. Sahar Zuberi
NOAH Family Physician

When you need care, call your PCP first: This is the doctor you select as your general source for addressing your health care needs. These providers are your go-to for managing chronic diseases. They know your medical history and can coordinate a plan of care with specialists as needed.

Depending on symptoms and time of day, it may be suggested that you visit an urgent care or emergency room. At NOAH, we offer same-day appointment availability for minor illnesses or injuries. If you need care at night or during the weekends, you can visit an urgent care for non-emergency health care needs. Alternatively, the emergency room treats life-threatening medical situations. In case of an emergency, or if you are unsure if you can drive to the nearest emergency room, you should call 9-1-1.

Urgent Care Symptoms Emergency Room Symptoms
Allergic reaction Chest pain
Bronchitis Broken bone
Nausea Seizures
Pink eye Major head injury
Sprain and or strain Severe abdominal pain
Rash Unconscious
Urinary tract infection Uncontrolled bleeding

You can make the best choice for you and your family. Contact your NOAH PCP (if during normal business hours) and schedule a same-day/QuickCare appointment. This is the most affordable and time saving option. If your PCP is not available, visit an urgent care center. This choice is still reasonable and helps you to avoid long wait times in an emergency room. In case of an emergency, go to the nearest emergency room. If you are unsure whether you can get there on your own, call 9-1-1.
